Cold therapy – and why you should give it a go

Cold therapy is simply exposing your body to cold temperatures. The simplest and most convenient way to do this is by standing under a cold shower for 2-3 minutes.

Studies have found that cold therapy can:

  • Increase metabolism and encourage fat loss
  • Increase circulation
  • Reduce stress
  • Improve alertness
  • Act as a potential antidepressant
  • Reduce inflammation and muscle soreness
  • Improve recovery times from training.

For me personally, I have been amazed at the difference a freezing shower first thing in the morning has made to my life. I find that I have far more energy, that I am more alert and focused and as a consequence have a more productive day. The best benefit, however, is that by tackling something uncomfortable head on first thing in the morning, I am in a positive mindset to tackle whatever the day throws at me.

Give it a go. Turn your shower to the coldest setting tomorrow and start by trying to stay under by 30 seconds. Build it up. I challenge you to a 20-day streak. It does get to the point where it is enjoyable… kind of. Let us know how you get on.
